On Tuesday, Californians hit the voting booths to vote on whether current California Governor Gavin Newsom should be removed from office. According to CNN, theĀ push to remove Newsom from office was startedĀ last year byĀ conservative Californians critical of the governor’s record on multiple issues, most notably regarding his decisions during theĀ COVID-19 pandemic.

WithĀ the potential of Newsom’s gubernatorial office being vacated, several stepped up to run for governor of California should the recall election be successful, and of those nearly four dozen candidates,Ā Caitlyn Jenner was perhaps one of the mostĀ well-knownĀ candidates. However, as results from the recall election trickled in on Tuesday, it was revealed thatĀ the retired Olympian andĀ polarizing popular culture figure performed horribly in the critical election.

Gubernatorial candidate Caitlyn Jenner talks to reporters about homeless issues as she campaigns to overthrow California Gov. Gavin Newsom in an upcoming special recall election on August 12, 2021 in Venice, California. A well-funded campaign collected the needed 2 million pro-recall signatures that triggered the special election to be held on September 14, ahead of the regularly scheduled 2022 general election.

According to CNN,Ā Jenner has reportedly garneredĀ 55,891 votes, which is just 1.1% of theĀ total statewide vote, in the “replace” section of the recall ballot. Despite the vast amount of publicity that her campaign used, Caitlyn Jenner lostĀ by an insurmountable margin, asĀ Larry ElderĀ earned the most votes for the “replace” nomination withĀ 2,373,571 votes,Ā almost 47% of the total statewide vote.

However, like Caitlyn Jenner’s nearly 56k votes, Elder’s 2.3 million votes were still not enough for him to becomeĀ California’s next governor because over 63% ofĀ Californians who votedĀ agreedĀ that Newsom should not be recalled. In response to the unsuccessful recall, Caitlyn Jenner offered a scathing critique ofĀ NewsomĀ as well as his constituents.

“He didn’t campaign to do this recall on not one of his successes because he doesn’t have any,”Ā Jenner remarked in her concession speech. “And I can’t believe that this many people actually voted to keep him in office. It’s a shame. Honestly, it’s a shame. You kind of get the government you deserve.”

Given the results of the recall election, Governor Gavin Newsom will remain in office,Ā and although the call for Newsom’s removal was ultimately unsuccessful, Tuesday’s electionĀ did reveal thatĀ conservative talk radio hostĀ Larry Elder has a potential future in California politics.
